Where

The course is usually based in Scotland, either Aviemore or Fort William, Glencoe.

Who is it for?

For anyone with some hillwalking experience, who wants to learn to travel in the mountains confidently at any time of the year. This course is ideal for anyone with little or no winter experience. Learn whilst walking in the wild Scottish Mountains.
 
If you already have some experience of winter conditions, this is a great way to improve your winter skills and enjoy the beauty of the Scottish Winter Mountains, in the company of a qualified winter leader. 

Content


It will be a mixture of instruction and guided walking in truly impressive mountains. You will learn about;

 

·         Moving on snow and ice; use of ice axe, and crampons.

·         Navigation, route finding and planning your own adventures.

·         Emergency procedures, survival and shelters, including snowholes.

·         Winter hazards, weather, avalanche avoidance.

·         Advice on equipment and clothing and lots more.


Snowdonia and the Lake District
For winter skills Scotland is usually the best in the UK, but for those with limited time, the Lakes and Snowdonia can give an opportunity to learn the basics, and maybe a bit more!

Taster days in Snowdonia or the Lakes, sharpen up your nav, find out about kit, winter hazards and weather, this is not intended as a winter skills course, due to the vagaries of winter weather south of the border, but as much will be crammed into the day as possible, ncluding use of ice axes and crampons, hopefully even on some snow! 

Wild Winter Walks and Taster Days
£40 per person, with discounted rates for groups of 3 to 6. Rate based on minimum of 2.

Equipment

 

Clients are advised to have their own insurance, and should be able to bring their own ice axe, crampons and suitable boots. A limited supply of equipment is available to hire at a very reasonable rate.
